국문 초록

제2차 트렌턴 전투는 그동안 미국 독립전쟁에 관한 연구에서 거의 무시되어 그 역사적 의미가 축소된 면이 없지 않다. 또한 대부분의 연구들은 전투의 실상에 치중한 나머지 총사령관인 워싱턴의 뛰어난 리더십에 관한 세밀한 분석은 거의 놓치고 있다. 따라서 본고는 제2차 트렌턴 전투가 세밀한 과정을 통해 일어났고 어떤 역사적 의미가 있는지와 더불어 그런 과정 하나하나에서 조지 워싱턴의 리더십이 어떻게 나타나는지를 살펴보는 것이 주목적이다. 제2차 트렌턴 전투는 워싱턴과 독립군에게 절체절명의 위기의 순간 배수진이었다. 아순핑크 강을 두고 벌어진 전투는 더 이상 물러갈 곳이 없었다. 병사 수는 물론 전쟁물자, 무기 등 모든 면에서 독립군보다 훨씬 우수한 영국군과 헷센군을 물리치지 않으면 안 되는 또 한 번의 위기의 순간이었다. 그만큼 총사령관의 판단력과 결정력이 너무나 중요했다. 리더의 잘못된 판단과 결정은 곧 패배를 의미한다. 이 전투에서 워싱턴의 판단과 결정이 얼마나 탁월했는가를 살펴볼 수 있다. 워싱턴은 전투과정 전체를 통해 아낌없는 리더십을 발휘했다. 그는 그동안의 패배를 통해 배우는 리더였다. 그는 달성해야만 하는 목표와 비전을 가진 리더였다. 그는 협력하는 리더였다. 그는 솔선수범하고 권한을 위임하는 리더였다. 그는 혁신적이고 실용적인 리더였다.

영문 초록

The 2nd Battle of Trenton has been almost ignored in the research on the American Revolutionary War, and its historical significance is not without diminished aspects. In addition, most of the studies focus on the reality of the battle and almost miss a detailed analysis of the outstanding leadership of Washington, the commander-in-chief. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to examine how the Second Battle of Trenton occurred through detailed processes and what historical significance it had, as well as how George Washington’s leadership appeared in each such process. The 2nd Battle of Trenton was the moment of absolute crisis for Washington and the Independence Army. The battle over the Assunpink Creek had nowhere to retreat. It was another moment of crisis in which they had to defeat the British and Hessian forces, who were far superior to the Independence Army in all respects, including the number of soldiers, war supplies, and weapons. That is why the commander- in-chief’s judgment and decisiveness were so important. A leader’s poor judgment and decision means defeat soon. We can see how excellent Washington’s judgment and decisions were in this battle. Washington displayed unstinting leadership throughout the course of the battle. He was a leader who learned through defeat. He was a leader with a goal and a vision he had to achieve. He was a collaborative leader. He was a leader who led by example and delegated authority. He was an innovative and pragmatic leader.
