국문 초록

우르 유적은 고대 메소포타미아 문명의 사치스럽기 그지없었던 ‘엘리트 문화’를 여실히 보여준다. 그러나 그처럼 화려했던 사치는 개인적 취향 때문이 아니라, 사회 시스템 때문에 발생했다. 삶은 물론 죽음까지도 다른 사람들과 달라야 한다는 엘리트 집단의 일종의 강박관념에서 극단적인 사치가 시작되었다. 최고 지배자들은 끊임없이 다른 사람과 구별되기 위해, 다른 말로 카리스마를 얻기 위해 과시적 소비가 필요했고 궁극적으로 수메르 지배자들의 사치에 대한 과도한 탐닉은 중앙아시아에서 아프리카에 이르는 광역 교역망을 형성하고 고대 세계체제를 구축하는 원동력이 되었다. 그러나 초기 왕조시대 후기부터 시작된 왕권 강화에 따른 사회적 갈등 심화, 주변 이민족의 발흥 그리고 장거리 교역의 주요 파트너였던 인더스 문명의 붕괴 같은 요소들이 복합적으로 작용하면서 우르 엘리트 집단의 과시적 사치는 쇠락한다. 또한 이와 더불어 사회 내부에서 ‘정의’를 요구하는 목소리가 더욱 커지면서 우르의 통치 이념 은 개인 중심의 배타적인 리더십에서 집단 중심의 포용적인 리더십으로 전화되고 동시에 사회적 정의에 대한 요구가 법제화되면서, 사치는 이제 카리스마적 권력의 정당성 확보의 주요 수단에서 도덕적으로 지탄받는 낭비가 되었다.

영문 초록

The Royal Cemetery of Ur clearly show the splendid ‘elite culture’ of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization. But such glamorous luxury came not because of personal taste, but because of the social system. Luxury began as a kind of obsession of the elite that life and death should be different from others. The supreme rulers constantly needed conspicuous consumption to distinguish themselves from others, in other words to gain charisma, and ultimately, the Sumerian rulers’ excessive indulgence in luxury formed a wide trade network from Central Asia to Africa and created the ancient world system. It became the driving force for building However, the conspicuous luxury of the Ur elite group declines as factors such as the deepening of social conflicts due to the strengthening of the monarchy that began in the late early dynasty, the rise of neighboring ethnic groups, and the collapse of the Indus civilization, which was a major partner of long-distance trade, work together. In addition, in order to respond to the changing international situation and the demands of society, Ur’s ruling ideology seems to have shifted from individual-centered exclusive leadership to group-centered inclusive leadership. As the voices for social justice have grown louder and those demands have been legislated, luxury has now become a morally condemned extravagance as a major means of securing the legitimacy of charismatic power.
