영문 초록

This paper discuss relation between reason and emotion in life and functions of emotion and reason in moral judgement and moral motivation. The contrast between reason and emotion has played a crucial role in the moral psychology of the Western ethical tradition. However, if we turn to Wang Yang Myung’s The Records of the Teachings of the Masters, there seems to be no such contrast of comparable importance. Wang does not employ the contrast between reason and emotion to assert the need for the primacy of reason. He does see complimentary relation between reason and emotion in moral cognition and moral motivation. Emotion and feeling have the following functions for moral awareness and moral behavior such as facilitating moral action choices, motivator for moral action, motivator to think, connecting conscious reason to basic biological needs, relating reason as a conscious logical processing to the complex contents and connections held in the subconscious. Through these functions, Emotions are tools of moral recognition and moral motivation. But for the most successful moral functioning, emotions need to be consciously examined by logical moral reasoning. Task of Moral education is an cultivation of moral emotion of students. And so, it is most important to design and implement moral education curriculum focused on reflecting emotion and feeling.
