According to the Haṭhayoga literature, there are three types of Prāṇāyāma: ① Recaka-prāṇāyāma, ② Pūraka-prāṇāyāma, and Kumbhaka-prāṇāyāma and there are two types of Kumbhaka: ① Sahita-kumbhaka and ② Kevala-kumbhaka.
Among the two types of Kumbhaka, Kevala-Kumbhaka is not a specific technique, but the result of training various Kumbhaka. The starting point of Kevala-Kumbhaka is ‘the state of holding the breath’ after inhaling the breath, and the prolongation of this very ‘state of holding the breath’ is Kevala-Kumbhaka. Therefore, Kevala-Kumbhaka is a state in which the act of inhaling and exhaling is excluded (varjitam) and only (kevalam) breath-holding state is continues. This Kevala-Kumbhaka is defined as the same as Kumbhaka-prāṇāyāma.
On the other hand, Sahita-kumbhaka is a kumbhaka accompanied by “the act of breathing” and “the act of exhaling” before holding the breath. Sahita-kumbhakahas been described in two types according to the literature.
1. The first type of Sahita-kumbhaka The first type of Sahita-kumbhaka is a collective term for all kind of kumbhakas consisting of ‘breathin in, hoding the breath, and exhaling’ motions. The literature that used Sahita-kumbhaka as a collective term for various Kumbhaka, such as Sūryabhedana-kumbhaka, Bhastrikā-kumbhaka, Ujjayī-kumbhaka are Yogabīja, Haṭhapradīpikā, and Jyostnā.
According to these literature, the various kumbhakas are the same in that they hold their breath after inhaling, but they are classified into Sūryabhedana-kumbhaka, Ujjayī-kumbhak etc.
according to the method of inhalation and exhalation.
For example, the technique of Sūryabhedana-kumbhaka is to repeat ‘inhale through the right nostril → hold the breath → exhale through the left nostril, and the technique of Ujjayī-kumbhaka is to repeat ‘inhale through both nostrils → hold th breath → exhale through the left nostril’.
2. The Seond kind of Sahita-kumbhaka On the other hand, according to the Yogaśāstra (DyŚ), Gheraṇḍasaṃhita (GhS), Kumbhakapaddhati (KP), Sahita-kumbhaka is not a term that encompasses ‘various kumbhakas accompanied by inhalation and exhalation’, but a kind of specific technique. According to Yogaśāstra (DyŚ) and Kumbhakapaddhati (KP), Sahita-kumbhaka is to repeat six actions such as ‘inhale through the left nostril→ hold the breath→ breathe through the right nostril→ breathe through the right nostril→ hold the breath→ breathe through the left nostril’.
Gheraṇḍasaṃhita (GhS) describe two types of Sahita-kumbhaka. One is the same as the method of Yogaśāstra (DyŚ) and Kumbhakapaddhati described above, and the other is the technique of reciting A-U-M in the process of inhaling-holding-exhaling. The Gheraṇḍasaṃhita called the former as Nirgarbha-sahitakumbhaka and the latter as Sagarbha-sahitakumbhaka.
Based on the discussion so far, Kevalakumbhaka and Sahitakumbhaka can be classified as follows.
