국문 초록

본 연구는 재미 치매 한인 노인 부양가족을 대상으로 한 임종 결정 이해 증진 심리교육 프로그램의 효과를 평가하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 위해, 본 연구에서는 통제집단과 실험집단으로 구분하여 각 집단간 심리교육 프로그램 사전, 사후의 임종의사 결정에 대한 이해도에 대해 전화면접을 통해 파악, 비교하였다. 집단간 차이는 공분산분석을 통해 측정하였다. 연구결과, 심리교육 프로그램은 부양가족의 치매와 임종 결정 이해 증진에 통계학적으로 유의한 수준의 효과가 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 이주 노인의 삶의 질을 향상시키는데 있어서 현 제도가 지니는 문제점을 확인하고, 이를 극복하기 위한 대안의 마련에 지침을 제공하리라 기대한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a psycho-educational intervention program (PEIP) on family caregivers' understanding about end-of-life decision for Korean immigrant elderly with dementia residing at nursing home. This study used a pre-test and post-test control group design to examine that PEIP would enhance family careviers to understand about end-of-life decision in comparison to two other control groups receiving only standard information routinely provided in either Korean or English. A two-hour long PEIP was designed to educate family caregivers about dementia prognosis and symptoms, life sustaining treatment choices, and a end-of-life decision procedure. The telephone interview included semi close-ended questions with regard to how well fmily caregivers understood end-of-life decision or knowledge of dementia. Data was analyzed by SPSS 19, using One-Way Analysis of the Covariance(ANCOVA). Results indicate that family caregivers in PEIP statistically significant increased a level of understanding about end-of-life decision compared with two other control groups. Results suggest shortcomings of current healthcare system and the need for educating minority elders and family caregivers in order to effectively address end-of-life decision.
