엘리엇의 공동체관과 앵글로 가톨릭시즘의 관계고찰

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 엘리엇의 공동체관이 그의 종교, 앵글로 가톨릭과 관련되어 있음을 고찰하여 그의 공동체관이 보다 광범위하게 적용될 수 있는 종교적 원리를 가지고 있음을 규명하는 것이다. 엘리엇의 공동체관에 대한 기존의 연구는 유럽 전통과 각 개별적 국가들의 특수성을 결합할 것을 추구하는 것으로 지적하였다. 그러나 이와 같은 결합은 매우 역설적이며 양립불가능하게 보인다. 이와 같은 역설적이고 양립불가능한 결합의 양상을 적절하게 이해하기 위해, 본 연구는 앵글로 가톨릭시즘이 가지는 몇 가지 특징에 주목하였다. 앵글로 가톨릭시즘은 유럽의 가톨릭전통을 추구하면서 영국 지역의 특수한 상황을 결합하는 종교적 애매모호성, 성육화의 교리를 지적추구로 접근하여 신앙심을 고취시키는 교리적 애매모호성과 더불어 빅토리아 시대의 도시 빈민들에 대한 관심과 물질적 현실사회에서 종교적 이상을 구현하기 위한 노력을 탐색하였다. 이와 같은 앵글로 가톨릭시즘의 특징으로, 본 연구는 앵글로 가톨릭시즘과 엘리엇의 공동체관이 관련되어 있으며, 그의 공동체관은 시·공간적 특수한 요소로 한정되는 것이 아니라 유물론적 차원을 넘어서며 모든 상황에서 적용될 수 있는 보편적 원리를 제시한다고 주장한다. 만약 엘리엇 연구자들이 엘리엇의 종교관과 그의 종교 앵글로 가톨릭시즘과의 관계연구를 더욱 면밀하게 수행한다면, 엘리엇의 문화와 공동체에 관한 더욱 광범위한 원리를 규명하여 현재에도 현실적으로 적용시킬 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find out that T. S. Eliot’s perspective on community is related with his religion, Anglo-Catholicism. His perspective on community was revealed as pursuing to combine European tradition and unique situation of each individual country(specifically England) in his several essays. To understand his paradoxical and incompatible perspective on community properly, this study focuses on ambiguous features of Anglo-Catholicism. First, it has religious ambiguity between European Catholic and unique situation of local England. Also, it has doctrinal ambiguity on intellectual pursuit for Incarnation, which may imply to pursue both Faith and Reason in order to balance credulity and scepticism. Furthermore, in Victorian era, it was concerned about social change helping the poor in the city for maximizing divine grace in the material human society. With some feature of Anglo-Catholicism shown above, this study argues that Eliot’s perspective on community is related with ambiguities of Anglo-Catholicism, and is not limited in specific temporal and spatial factors but universal principles that can be applied over all kinds of situations beyond materialistic dimension. The fact that Eliot's perspective on community has universal factors can reveal that his intention for social change may give a glue to improve contemporary situation practically.
