송·명대(宋明代) 신유학의 사상적 계보와 정치철학적 함의 및 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 송·명대 신유학의 사상적 계보와 정치철학적 함의 및 영향을 규명하기 위한 것이다. 공자 이후의 유학은 두 차례에 걸쳐 큰 변화를 겪게 되는데, 그 하나는 맹자의 성선설과 순자의 성악설이라는 두 계보로 나뉜 것이고, 다른 하나는 송대 이후 주희의 성리학과 왕수인의 양명학이라는 두 계보로 나뉜 것이다. 신유학으로 분류되는 성리학이나 양명학의 뿌리는 모두 원시유학이며, 방법론상에 있어 약간의 차이가 있긴 하지만, 수기치인(修己治人)을 통한 이상사회의 구현이라는 점에서 일치한다. 신유학은 공맹사상에 철학적·형이상학적 정당성을 부여함으로써 종교의 정치적 실천을 국가 차원에서 가능하게 했다는 점에서 그 정치철학적 함의는 실로 크다. 중국철학사에서 성리학의 지위는 육왕학파 등에 의해 몇 차례 도전을 받기는 했지만, 근대 서양철학이 유입될 때까지 중국인의 의식 속에 가장 뿌리 깊게 자리 잡은 철학체계였을 뿐만 아니라, 동아시아의 주류 사상으로서 정치와 문화, 생활양식과 사유 방식에 이르기까지 광범하게 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 한편 양명학은 주자학이 관학이 되어 학문적 교조화의 풍조가 만연하면서 주자학이 철학사상으로서의 생명력을 잃고 고급 관료가 되기 위한 정치의 수단으로 전락한 데 대한 반성적 비판을 통하여 성립되었다. 오늘날 유학은 서구사상과의 혼합·절충의 과정을 밟고 있다. 신유학과 같은 새로운 사상적 세력의 형성 여부는 무엇보다도 유학사상 자체 내에서 미래 인류사회의 비전을 제시할 수 있는 보편적인 사상원리를 도출해낼 수 있느냐의 여부가 관건이다. 역사란 전통과 현대의 끊임없는 대화이며, 전통과 현대의 괴리는 전통사상에 대한 창조적 재해석을 통하여 극복될 수 있다는 점에서 오늘날 성리학에 대한 현대적 재해석이 절실히 요망된다.

영문 초록

This study is to illuminate the genealogy of Neo-Confucian thought and its politico-philosophical implication and influence during the Song-Ming Era. Confucianism after Confucius had undergone big changes twice: the one is the division of genealogy into Mencius' ethical doctrine of innate goodness and Sun-Tzu's ethical view that human nature is evil, and the other is the division of genealogy into Chu Hsi's Xing-Li-Xue and Wang Shou-Ren's Yangming-Xue after the Song era. The roots of Xing-Li-Xue or Yangming-Xue which are classified into Neo-Confucianism are all primitive Confucianism, and though there are some methodological differences, they coincide with each other in their views of realization of an ideal society through moral training and governing. The Politico-philosophical implication of Neo-Confucianism is really great in that it enabled religious truth to be practiced politically at country level by empowering Confucius-Mencius thought philosophical, metaphysical legitimacy. The status of Neo-Confucianism in Chinese philosophical history, though it was challenged by Lu-Wang School, etc. several times, not only had been the most deep-rooted philosophical system entrenched in the Chinese consciousness before the introduction of modern western philosophy into China, but also as the mainstream of East Asian thought it has had drastic effects widely on politics and culture, the mode of living and one's way of thinking. Meanwhile, Yangming-Xue was established through reflective criticism of which Xing-Li-Xue came to be a national school and the trend of scholastic dogmatism was prevalent, and thus Xing-Li-Xue lost its life force as philosophical thought and degenerated into political means to become a high-ranking official. Nowadays Confucianism is in the course of mingling and compromise with western thought. Whether a new influential thought like Neo-Confucianism is to be formed or not depends first and foremost on drawing a universal principle of thought which could suggest the vision of human society in the future within Confucian thought itself. History is the dialogue between tradition and modern times, and today modern reinterpretation of Xing-Li-Xue is ungently needed in that the gap between tradition and modern times could be overcome through creative reinterpretation of traditional thought.
