소설 『자밀라』에서 영화 <자밀라>로의 서사 구조 변용과 주제의식 구현 양상

국문 초록

소설의 영화화는 문학적 허구를 영화라는 매체의 특성을 통해 변용하는 것이다. 하지만 이 변용 과정은 별개의 창작 과정이 아닌 두 매체의 상호 보완 관계라고 할 수 있다. 칭기즈 아이트마토프의 소설 『자밀라 Jamila』와 원작을 바탕으로 제작된 영화 <자밀라>는 진취적이며 도전적인 여성의 전형인 자밀라와 그녀의 주체적 삶에 대한 의지에 영향을 받아 자신의 길을 개척하는 시동생 세이트 Seyit의 삶을 다룬 작품이다. 소설이 영화화될 경우 원작의 재현을 벗어나 완전히 새로운 서사로 변형되는 경우도 있지만 영화 <자밀라>는 전개 방식 그리고 흐름 등 유사한 서사구조를 취하면서 원작의 내용과 주제를 잘 재현해내고 있다. 즉, 소설을 영화화하는 과정에서 서사 구조와 이야기의 변용 면에서 극적인 변형 없이 감독의 재해석과 영화적 장치를 추가하면서 입체적으로 전개되고 있으며, 두 작품 모두 과거를 회상하는 플래시 백 기법을 사용해 소설의 서사 방식이 영화에 그대로 적용되고 있다. 소설에서 영화로의 주제 의식 구현 면에서 두 작품 모두 표면적으로는 자밀라와 다니야르 Daniyar의 사랑 이야기를 중심으로 전개되지만 이는 단순한 이성애를 모티프로 한 서사가 아니다. 전통적인 관습을 따르던 당시의 순종적인 여성들과는 반대로 이에 도전하며, 자신이 갈망하는 것을 위해 도전하는 진취적인 자밀라의 행동 그리고 그녀의 선택을 보며 그 역시 자신이 욕망하는 삶을 향해 길을 떠나는 세이트의 변화된 모습은 독자들과 관객들에게 자신의 삶의 주인이 누구인지에 대한 교훈을 일깨워주고 있다. 소설과 영화는 자밀라와 서술자 세이트가 사랑을 매개로 주체적인 개인으로 성장하는 과정을 다루는데 있어 동일한 서사 구조를 통해 원작이 추구했던 주제 의식을 잘 재현하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Cinematization of a novel is to transform literary fiction through the features of a medium called film. However, this transformation process is a complementary interaction between the two media, not a separate creative process. The novel 『Jamila』 written by Chinghiz Aitmatov and the film based on the original work, deal with the life of Jamila, the epitome of an enterprising and challenging woman, and her brother-in-law, Seyit, who pioneers his own path under the influence of her will to lead an independent life. When a novel is adapted into a film, it can become a completely different story than the original work, but the film faithfully reproduces the original work s contents and concept by following a similar narrative framework, such as development process and flow of story. In other words, in the process of making a novel into a film, it is developed three-dimensionally without dramatic changes in the narrative structure and the transformation of the story, adding the director s reinterpretation and cinematic device. Both works use flashback techniques to recall the past, and the narrative method of the novel is applied to the film. In terms of realizing the theme consciousness from novel to film, both works are superficially centered on the love tale of Jamila and Daniyar, but this is not a narrative based on a motif of simple heterosexuality. Contrary to the obedient women of the time who followed traditional customs, the adventurous Jamila s actions of challenging for what she craves, and the changing appearance of Seyit, who also left the way toward the life he desires, remind readers and audiences a lesson about who owns their life. It can be confirmed that the novel and the film well reproduce the theme consciousness pursued by the original work through the same narrative structure in dealing with the process of life of Jamila and Seyit growing into independent individuals through love.
