국문 초록

소설의 하위 장르로서 추리소설은 대도시의 발생과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다. 그중에서도 특별히 인구 집중이 낳은 범죄 라는 문제에 대응한 문학 장르이다. 도시의 범죄는 과거의 범죄와 다른 양상을 띠었다. 단순히 수의 증가뿐 아니라 범죄 양상이 복잡해지는 경향도 보였다. 범죄를 보는 시간도 달라졌다. 범죄를 낭만적으로 바라보던 시간이 다라져 사회적 위협으로 보 는 시각이 보편하된 것이다. 범죄는 개인적인 원인으로 치환되고 문제의 해결은 탐정의 뛰어난 능력을 증명할 뿐이다. 발생 시기로 볼 때 추리소설은 범죄에 담겨 있는 전복적 에너지를 감시하고 처벌하려는 지배 계급의 의지를 대변한다. 추리소설의 범죄자는 언제나 사회의 주류층이 아니고 사회의 안전을 위협하는 하층민이거나 이방인들이다. 따라서 그들을 제거하는 것은 안전을 회복하는 일이고 그 임무는 언제나 사회의 주류층 인물들에게 맡겨진다. 홈즈 시리즈에서는 국가기구를 그리 긍정적으로 그리지 않는다. 자본주의 지배 계급은 자신들의 헤게모니를 위협하는 두 가지 세력의 도전에 직면했다. 하나가 노동계급에 의해 주도듸는 혁명이라면 다른 하나는 경찰로 상징되는 국가기구의 강화였다. 지배계급에게 국가의 통제와 개입은 노동계급의 성장만큼 불편한 것이었다. 홈즈 시리즈를 비롯한 영국 추리소설에서 경찰은 대개 독자적으로 범죄를 수사할 능력이 없는 무능한 존재로 그려진다.

영문 초록

As a subgenre of fiction, mystery novel are closely related to the emergence of large cities. Among them, it is a literary genre that specifically responds to the problem of crime caused by population concentration. Crime in the city took on a different pattern from that of the past. Not only did the number increase, but the pattern of crimes has also changed. The romantic view of crime has changed, and the view of crime as a social threat has become more common. Crime is replaced by personal causes, and solving the problem only proves the detective s superior ability. Judging from the time of its occurrence, mystery novels represent the will of the ruling class to monitor and punish the subversive energy contained in crime. The criminals of mystery novels are not always the mainstream of society, but the lower classes or strangers who threaten the safety of society. Therefore, getting rid of them is to restore the safety of society, and the task is always left to the mainstream of society. In the Holmes series, the state apparatus is not portrayed very positively. The capitalist ruling class faced the challenge of two forces threatening its hegemony. One was the revolution led by the working class, and the other was the strengthening of the state apparatus symbolized by the police. For the ruling class, state control and intervention was as inconvenient as the growth of the working class. In British mystery novels, including the Holmes series, police officers are usually portrayed as incompetent beings who cannot independently investigate crimes.
