국문 초록

이 글은, 각자의 해석이 진실을 대신하는 탈진실(Post-truth) 시대, 민주주의의 핵심 과제인 공공선 도출에 대한 논의와, 시민사회･교육 등 경험영역에서 공공선 도출을 위한 숙의적 실천이 요구된다는 문제의식에 기반한다. 이를 위해, 먼저, 하나의 진리 혹은 진실이라는 실증주의적 인식론을 넘어, 진실을 독점했던 권력에 저항하는 비판이론과 실천적 유용성을 초점으로 진실을 해석하는 실용주의 관점에서 탈진실의 긍정성을 해석한다. 둘째, 이론적으로 논의된 탈진실의 긍정성을 경험 세계에서 실현시킬 기제로 숙의와 공공선을 논의한다. 이때, 상대의 진실을 굴복시키려는 논쟁적 토론(argumentive discussion)과 달리, 숙의는 신로마공화주의 비지배 원칙에 따라 각자의 진실과 상호소통하며 개별선과 공동선을 조화하는 과정임을 논의한다. 또한, 숙의를 통해 도출될 개별선과 공동선의 조화란, 개인의 다원적 정체성에 기반해 공적이익에 깃든 각자의 사적이익을 선별하고 융합하는, 즉 함께(共) 구성하는 공공선(公共善)임을 논의한다. 이 글은, 듣고 싶고 믿고 싶은 것에 따라 사실에 대한 다른 해석이 도출되고, 다른 해석들 사이 갈등이 폭발하는 탈진실 시대, 경험영역에서 숙의적 실천을 활성화해 탈진실을 주체성과 민주성의 심화로 전환하기 위한 이론적 논의다.

영문 초록

In the era of post-truth where individual’s interpretations substitute reality, there is an urgent need for the key objectives of democracy: to derive common good and deliberative practices in the empirical spheres like civil society and education. This study discusses how to address this urgent need, first by going beyond the positivist epistemology which insists truth under the monism. Instead, post-truth is positively viewed due to its employment of pragmatism and identification of truth relative to its significance for an actor’s life. Second, this study discusses deliberation and common good as the mechanism to promote the aforementioned positive aspects of post-truth in the empirical world. Unlike argumentative discussion with the aim of beating the counterpart’s truth, deliberation, in line with the principle of non-domination forwarded by the Neo-Roman Republicanism, reconciles individual good and common good by interrelating respective truths. Reconciliation of individual good and common good is to jointly compose public/common good. This is done by integrating a range of private interests which are partially embedded in public interests due to diverse relational identities held by individuals. The era of post-truth bursts with conflicts due to diverse interpretations of facts based on individual beliefs. This paper is a theoretical discussion on a transition from post-truth to an intensification of individual’s subjectivity and democracy in this ear, by promoting deliberative practices in empirical realms.
