한국 그림책의 무생물 캐릭터 의인화 현황 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 2010년부터 2019년까지의 한국 그림책에 등장하는 의인화된 무생물 캐릭터의 현황을 살펴보고자 하였다. 한국 그림책에는 무생물을 의인화한 시도가 활발하지 않지만, 매년 출간되는 한국 그림책 수에 비례해 볼 때 무생물 캐릭터가 등장하는 작품의 수가 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 캐릭터의 유형을 보면, 문화할인율이 낮은 보편적 캐릭터가 한국의 문화나 역사를 배경으로 하는 지역적 캐릭터보다 더 많은 비중을 차지하였다. 그러나, 보편적 캐릭터의 경우도 문화 또는 역사적 의미가 더해지면 지역적 캐릭터가 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 캐릭터의 역할에서는 매년 무생물 캐릭터가 주요 캐릭터로 등장하는 작품들이 증가하는 추세를 보였다. 그림책 속 무생물의 외적 이미지 등을 중심으로 무생물 캐릭터 의인화의 특징을 분석한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 무생물 캐릭터의 성별과 연령은 알 수 없었지만, 말을 하거나 움직이면서 얼굴의 이목구비로 감정을 표현하는 경우가 많았다. 캐릭터 외형의 색깔은 무생물의 종류에 따라 보편적인 색깔로 표현되었다. 한편, 위와 같은 분석 결과를 바탕으로 무생물 캐릭터의 범위가 확장되는 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 형태가 없는 존재를 캐릭터화하거나, 하나의 무생물 캐릭터에 인간과 동물의 특징을 동시에 표현한 창의적인 시도들이 등장하고 있다. 이러한 무생물 캐릭터의 가능성을 제고하기 위해 관련 연구를 더욱 활발히 진행할 필요가 있다. 본 연구가 무생물 캐릭터와 그림책 캐릭터 관련 연구에 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the study is to analyze the types and roles of inanimate characters in picture books and the features of anthropomorphic inanimate characters on the basis of outer images in order to examine the current status of the anthropomorphic inanimate characters in Korean picture books from 2010 to 2019. Based on the results, the followings are discussed. This study first shows that although only a few anthropomorphic inanimate characters are included in Korean picture books, the number of picture books with inanimate characters has been increased in proportion to the number of Korean picture books that are published every year, and that universal characters with low cultural discount rates are used more than regional characters that require background knowledge of Korean cultures or history. Second, it identifies that universal characters could be regional characters as well once cultural or historical meanings are added. Third, the volumes of picture books in which inanimate characters are featured as main characters are on the rise every year and the gender and age of the inanimate characters are mostly unknown. Furthermore, most of the inanimate characters talk, move, and express emotions with their facial features and the colors of their appearance are expressed as universal colors according to the type of inanimate characters in most cases. Meanwhile, this study identifies the potential for extending the range of inanimate characters based on the analysis. It’s an attempt to express the characterization of amorphous existences and features of both humans and animals. There is a need to reconsider the potential of these inanimate characters and develop the related research, and moreover, this study will lead to follow-up research with regard to inanimate characters and characters of picture books.
