국문 초록

본 연구는 18세기 프랑스 수사학자이자, 언어학자인 콩디악(Etienne Bonnotde Condillac)의 독본에서 그가 밝히고 있는 언어관을 이해하는 데 있다. 콩디악은 로크의 경험론을 이어받은 프랑스의 대표적인 언어 및 문법학자로서 그가 집필한 저서들은 프랑스 계몽주의 시대의 언어관(철학적 문법론), 수사학, 논리학의 근간을 이루고 있다. 18세기 프랑스에서는 형이상학자들(뒤마르,보제)이 중요시했던 이론과 실천 중심의 이성주의와는 달리 콩디악과 디드로와 같은 급진적 경험론자들은 ‘관찰’과 ‘경험’의 입장을 우선하고 ‘영혼의 활동들’을 정의한다. 이들은특히 감각주의에 입각한 관념(idee)의 소통을 위해 언어활동들을 설명하고 있다. 다시 말해 언어는 인간정신의 보편적이고 이성적인 질서속에서가 아니라, 기계적이고, 필요에 의해, 그리고 본능적 연관성이나 감각에서 발전된다는 것이다. 이러한 콩디악의 감각론적 언어관을 파악하기 위해 본 논문에서는 그의 저서들(『인간지식의기원론』,『감각론』,『논리학』,『서법』)에 제시된 감각론의 구성요소들, 즉 기호의 개념들, 언어활동의 원리, 서법 등을 중심으로 18세기 언어관(철학적수사학)의 일면을 고찰했다. 본 연구는 적어도 당사의 백과전서주의자의 언어관을 한 단계 뛰어넘어 또다른 18세기 프랑스 언어학의 정체성을 탐색하는 기회가 될 것이고, 이후 소쉬르를 비롯한 현대 언어학에 영향을 미친 콩디악의 언어관을 재평가 하는 기회를 마련할 수 있 을것이다.

영문 초록

By the mid-eighteenth century, Condillac maintained, from the ‘Essai surl‘origine des connaissances humaines’ through ‘Logique’, an empiricalsensationalism based on the principle that observations made by senseperception are the foundation for human knowledge. His works deal withsensation, communication and mind. He develops a qualified Locke’s theoryof knowledge. believing that there is no knowledge without language. In this paper, unifying by his spiritualistic sensationalism being articulatedaround three poles(the soul, the body, the signs), and studying the relationbetween the soul and the body through the three signs(accidental signs,natural signs, conventional signs), we explored his explanation of theorigins and developments of human knowledge. Moreover, the priorityCondillac gave to the language of action on the formation of thought. Emphasizing the importance of the body, the double languages of actioncould be defined as languages composed of gestures and natural cries. Wehave solved the problem of the origins of human language through thedouble languages of action, which are practical knowledge (first languageof action) and theoretical knowledge(second language of action). Lastly toestablish Condillac’s art of writing, we described, from the points of viewof the grammarian, the normative rule, and the role of deviation,irregularity, the norm in style, the movements against the arbitrariness oftaste(goût), etc. To close, this study led us to advance important and original views onCondillac’s theory of language, and to offer a more precise account of whatexactly is given to us by each of the sense organs than any that had beenoffered up to his day. Condillac’s contribution to linguistics is welldocumented, and has been explored quite throughly. For Condillac, whilenot a popular writer, had a strong influence on the writing of many of theeighteenth-century philosophes.
