서양 고지도에 표현된 제주도

국문 초록

서양에서 제주도의 존재가 처음으로 등장하는 시기는 16세기 이후이다. 이 시기 서양과 동양의 교류가 활발해지면서 조선이라는 나라를 인식하게 되고 지도에도 제주도가 한반도의 끝 부분에 그려진다. 그런데 이 시기 제작된 몇몇 지도에는 남해안과 제주도에 해당하는 곳에 포르투갈어로 ‘도적섬(Ilhas dos Ladrones)’이라 표기되어 있다. 이후 17세기에 접어들면서 제주는 ‘풍마도(I. Fungma, Fongma)’로 표기된다. 1655년 중국에 선교사로 왔던 마르띠니의 『중국지도첩』에 처음 등장한다. 서양인이 명명한 ‘풍마도’는 당시 지식 정보의 네트워크를 고려한다면 중국 지도의 지명을 영문으로 표기한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 17세기에는 ‘풍마도’와 더불어 ‘켈파트(Quelpart)’가 등장한다. ‘켈파트’라는 명칭은 제주도에 표착했던 하멜이 자신의 보고서에 제주도를 ‘켈파트’라 표기했고, 책으로 간행되면서 제주도가 ‘켈파트’로 널리 알려지게 되었다. ‘켈파트’는 제주도의 대표적인 지명으로 자리 잡게 되면서 20세기 초반까지 이어져 내려왔다. 지금의 ‘제주도’는 20세기 이후에야 나타난다.

영문 초록

The first historical reference to Jeju Island in Europeans comes in the 16th century. As trade between Europe and the Orient including Asia became more active in this era, the country of Joseon brought into existence to Europe along which Jeju Island emerged in cartography as a southernmost tip of the Korean peninsula. Interestingly, some maps made during this period referred to Jeju Island and the southern coast of Korea, in Portugese, as Ilhas dos Ladrones, or “Thieves’ Islands”. At the start of the 17th century Jeju Island was also marked as “Fungma (or, Fongma), which appears for the first time in the ”Atlas of China“ of M. Martini who arrived in China as a missionary in 1655. It can be considered that, when taking into account the knowledge and information network of the times, island ”Fungma“ shown on Western maps is romanized from Chinese name for Jeju. In the late 17th century the name “Quelpart”, together with “Fungma”, became known among Europeans, which indicates a trading vessel of the Dutch East India Company. H. Hamel, a Dutch seaman, who was shipwrecked on a voyage to Japan and remained on the isle, described Jeju as “Quelpart” in his report, Hamel’s Journal, which was subsequently published, thereby making Jeju Island to be widely known as the name of “Quelpart”. “Quelpart”, having enjoyed so long as a tradition of use by Western cartographers, was handed down to the early 20th century as a typical name standing for Jeju Island.
