일상생활에서 체현된 가사노동의 가치

국문 초록

가사노동의 경제적 가치를 밝혀낸 기존연구는 가사노동의 정치경제적 효용성을 명확히 드러냈다. 경제적 가치가 분명해짐에 따라, 사회적으로 가사노동의 가치는 공론화되고 인정되었다. 그러나 사회적으로 인정된 가사노동의 가치를, 일상생활에서 행위자들은 어떻게 향유하고 있는지에 대한 연구는 부재하다. 이러한 문제의식에 기반해, 본 연구는 두 세대 (초기산업화세대와 민주화세대) 구술자 72명의 심층인터뷰 텍스트로, 행위자가 체현한 가사노동의 가치를 분석했다. 이때 행위자가 체현한 가치란 귀납적 분석 결과를 명확히 하기 위해, 몸의 사회학과 가치에 기반한 경제 이론을 인식론적 틀로 활용했다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초기산업화세대는 “가치, 무슨 가치, 난 몰라. 한 번도 생각해 본 적 없어”라는 구술이 드러내듯, 여성이 당연히 하는 것으로 여겨진 가사노동의 가치는 인식되지 않는다. 그러나 경제적 저발전으로 인한 전국가적 빈곤 상황에서, 가사노동을 포함한 여성의 노동 없이는 가족을 유지하고 자녀를 양육하는 것이 거의 불가능했고, “솔직히 돈으로 환산 못하죠”란 구술은 몸에 체현된 가치를 드러낸다. 이에 반해, 둘째, 민주화세대는 가사노동의 경제적 가치에 대해 연구와 미디어 보도 등을 통해 그 가치를 인지한다. 하지만 인지와 다르게“스스로 저는 가치를 발견하지는 못하는 거 같아요”란 구술이 밝히듯, 일상생활에서 구술자는 그 가치를 향유하지 못한다. 한편 셋째, 민주화세대는 노동으로 바빴던 부모와 부재했던 관계를 성찰하면서, 자녀들에게 심리적 안정감, 위안 등을 줄 수 있기를, 즉 가사노동의 정서적 가치를 욕망한다. 이 연구는 기존 연구가 밝힌 가사노동 가치와 행위자가 일상에서 체현한 가치의 어긋남을, 그리고 가사노동의 물질적 가치를 넘어 정서적 가치에 대한 행위자의 욕구를 드러냈다는 의의가 있다. 그렇지만, 이 연구 구술자들이 주로 가사노동 제공자로 가사노동 수혜자 (자녀, 돌봄이 필요한 노인)들이 체현한 가치를 포함하지 못한 한계가 있다.

영문 초록

Existing studies focusing on the economic value of housework have proved the significance of housework in society through clarifying its impact on political economic life. However, due to the lack of studies on the actors’ embodied value of housework, there is little comprehension on how actors enjoyed and recognize the value of housework in everyday life. Therefore, relying on the concepts of embodied sociology and value-based economy, this study analyses, employing 72 interview texts, the embodied value of housework generated by the interactions of actors with socioeconomic conditions. The research results are as follows. First, as the saying: “value, what value, I don’t know such a thing” goes, the early industrialization generation did not recognize the value of housework that women deserve and took it for granted. Nevertheless, under the national poverty by economic underdevelopment in then Korea, without women’s work that includes housework, maintaining family and bringing up children would have been impossible. In this context, this generation revealed the embodied value of housework, saying “honestly, to measure the value with money is impossible.” By contrast, democratization generation has obviously recognized the value of housework through studies and mass-media. However, unlike their consciousness, their embodied value of housework in everyday life is little, which is revealed in their story, “Yet, I have not found the value myself.” In the meantime, reflecting the lack of relationship with their parents who were so busy for a living, they desire for the emotional value of housework such as giving emotional safety or consolation to children. This research is significant in that it reveals the mismatch between actors’ embodied value of housework and the value defined by existing studies and the actors’ desire for emotional value of housework beyond its material value. However, because all interviewees are adult care-givers, I expect that the embodied value of housework of care receivers will be discovered by follow-up research.
