토익 시험의 코퍼스 특성이 대학생의 성적 향상에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 영어 시험의 구조적 분석에 관한 연구들에서 활용도가 매우 높은 코퍼스 분석을 통하여 토익 시험의 구조적 특징과 시험 성적 간의 인과관계를 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구는 대학교 학부생들을 대상으로 한 학기동안 실시된 교양영어의 모 의 토익 시험 성적에 대한 자료를 수집하고 해당 시험에 대한 코퍼스 분석을 실시하였다. 코퍼스 분석을 통해서 Type, Token, TTR 등의 3개 지수를 모의 토익 시험의 각 파트별로 도출하고 이러한 코퍼스의 기본적인 지수들과 성적 향상의 인과관계를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 Type, Token, TTR 등의 3개 기본 지수는 1, 2차 평가의 성적 분포에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 Type, Token 등의 어휘 관련 지수는 모의 토익 응시자의 1, 2차 평가 성적의 향상에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. Type이 증가할수록, Token이 감소할수록 성적 향상도는 높은 것으로 나타났고 이는 반복된 토익 시험에서 성적 향상에 Type의 증가가 도움을 주고, Token의 증가는 오히려 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 사실을 말해준다. 그리고 어휘 밀집도를 나타내는 TTR 변동은 성적 향상과는 무관한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 코퍼스의 구조적 변동에 의해서 성적 향상도가 다를 수 있다는 점에서 토익 시험의 신뢰성을 향상시키기 위한 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 특히 토익 시험을 각 파트별로 구분하여 각각에 대한 코퍼스 분석을 실시할 경우 코퍼스 지수들의 변동에 의해서 성적 향상도가 파트별로 다를 수 있다는 점이 밝혀졌다.

영문 초록

The following study aims at investigating the causal relationship between the structural characteristics of TOEIC exams and test results through the corpus analysis, which is often utilized in studies that analyze the structure of English exams. Through the corpus analysis, three indexes including the Type, Token, and TTR were drawn from each part of mock TOEIC exam, and the causal relationship between the basic index of corpus and the result improvements were analyzed. Four types of mock TOEIC exams that were actually used in college classes and eight contrasted 1st and 2nd test results were used as a basis for the analysis. It was evident through the results that three of the basic indexes including the Type, Toke, and TTR have an effect on the distribution of test results of the 1st and 2nd evaluation. In particular, vocabulary related indexes such as the Type and Token had a significant impact in the improvement of the 1st and 2nd test results in the participants of the mock TOEIC exam. It was evident that the greater the Type and the lower the Token, the greater the improvement in results. Also for repetitive TOEIC exams, it was shown that the Type enhances the improvement in results, and the increase in Token rather has a negative impact on the results. Furthermore, the TTR fluctuation which indicates the density of vocabulary, was shown to be irrelevant to test result improvements. The analysis results hopes to provide various implications for structural analysis as test equivalence must be maintained in order to secure the validity of TOEIC exams.
