Second language (L2) vocabulary research investigating the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and comprehension has shown that for written discourse, L2 learners need to know 98% of running words in a text to gain adequate comprehension while 95-98% of words should be known for comprehension of spoken discourse. Building on these findings, the present study examined the English section of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), administered from 2016 to 2018, to estimate the vocabulary size necessary for adequate comprehension. Using the Range program (Nation & Heatley, 2002), the study analyzed the English listening and reading passages of the CSAT, focusing on the number of words and their frequency distribution. Results revealed that 2,000-4,000 word families plus proper nouns would be sufficient to reach 95-98% lexical coverage for the listening section. On the other hand, 98% lexical coverage in the reading section required vocabulary knowledge of 6,000 word families, a sizable number of words which may pose a challenge for the students in their vocabulary learning. These findings underscore the importance of having a large receptive vocabulary, especially for reading performance on the test.
