조선 表箋의 典範을 찾아서 <세종실록>과 <東文選>의 역할을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 대중국 관계에서 임금의 이름으로 지어졌던 전통적 외교문서인 표전이 사대문서의 성격을 공고히 하면서 조선의 표전으로 규범화 하는 과정을 탐색 하였다. 실리에 우위를 두고, 비교적 자유로운 형태로, 때와 상황에 따라 융통성있게 지어졌던 고려의 표전이 명분과 격식을 강화하게 되는 배경에는 문구와 태도를 두고 벌어진 선초의 표전사건이 있다. 예기치 않았던 외교 갈등을 겪고 조선은 사대의식을 선명하게 드러내는 방향으로 제술 방식을 전환하되, 큰 나라가 작은 나라를 돌보아야 하는 도리, 즉 字小의 메시지를 함축시키는 수사적 전략을 통해 事大와 字小가 유교적 이상사회를 향한 쌍방의 의무임을 강조하였다. 표전을 둘러싸고 벌어졌던 명나라와의 갈등이 해결국면으로 접어들면서 조선은 보다 체계적인 문장 관리 시스템을 구축하는 한편, 표전의 형식과 표현 방식 면에서 도 규범이 될 만한 틀을 마련하고자 하는 노력을 하게 된다. 이러한 노력을 구체적 으로 보여주는 자료가 세종실록과동문선이다. 세종실록은 세종을 포함한 여러 사람의 논의와 손을 거쳐 한편의 표전이 완성되는 과정을 소상하게 기록하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 84편에 달하는 표전을 全文 수록, 후세에 전하고자 하는 의도를 분명히 드러내고 있다. 한편, 집단 제작으로 추정되는 이들 작품의 상당수는 동문 선에 ‘無名氏’의 작품으로 실려 확고한 典範의 역할을 수행하게 된다. 세종실록 이 많은 작품을 통해 다양한 표본을 제시하는 역할을 하였다면 동문선은 완성도를 갖춘 작품을 선정, 文章으로서의 지위를 부여함과 동시에 典範을 후대에 전파하는 역할을 하였다. 강대국인 明과의 관계에서 불가불 사대할 수밖에 없었던 시대, ‘정교하게 기획된 문장’은 國益을 도모하고 문화적 수준을 드날리는 전략적 선택이 었다.

영문 초록

This study explored the process in which kings’ names on traditional diplomatic documents(Pyojeons) in the relationship with China established the norm as Pyojeons of Chosun as well as solidified characteristics of sychophantic documents. In the early years of the Chosun Dynasty, Pyojeon case regarding phrases and attitude was the reason Pyojeon of Goryeo flexibly named in comparatively free forms depending on times and conditions with priority on practical interests changed due to justification and formality. In the unexpected situation of diplomatic conflict, Chosun changed the method of writing in the direction of clearly expressing sycophancy. Instead, through the rhetorical strategy that implies the message of benevolent, the duty for which a big country must take care of a small country, Chosun strongly expressed that sycophancy and benevolent were the duties of both parties toward Confucian ideal society. As the conflict with the Ming Dynasty over Pyojeon came to a settlement phase, Chosun made efforts to establish the frame of norm in terms of form and expressive method of Pyojeon in addition to establishment of a more systematic sentence management system.  Sejong Silok(record of King Sejong) and Dongmunseon are the examples that concretely show these efforts. Sejong Silok records the detailed process of completion of one piece of Pyojeon through discussions and hands of many people including Sejong and evidently reveals its intention to cover entire text of 84 Pyojeons and transmit them to later generations. On the other hand, since Dongmunseon includes many of these works, which were estimated to be collectively written by “unidentified persons”, it performed a concrete role of pattern. While Sejong Silok played a role to suggest various samples through many works, Dongmunseon selected works with completion, gave the status as a literature, and played a role of transmitting the pattern to later generations. In an age with no choice but to choose sycophancy in relation to the powerful Ming Dynasty, ‘elaborately designed text’ was an important means to promote national interests and reveal cultural advancements.
