발터 벤야민의 비평이론과 가능성으로서의 예술

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 발터 벤야민이 개진했던 기술복제 시대의 예술담론에 근거하여 감성학적 관점에서 예술의 새로운 가능성을 , 밝혀내는 데 있다. 이를 위해 그의 비평이론을 구성하는 핵심개념인 아우라를 복합적인 관점에서 고찰할 것이다. 아우라의 다층적이고 모호한 속성에 대한 심도 있는 논의를 통하여 그의 사유가 가진 통합성을 다시 한 번 확인하고자 한다. 그 통합적 사유의 바탕 위에서, 후기자본주의 전자복제 시대에 예술을 통한 변증법적 해방의 계기를 조명하는 데 이 논문의 궁극적 목적이 있다. 해방의 계기는 벤야민이 아우라의 몰락으로 규정했던 예술작품에 대한 세속적이고 평범한 이해 속에서 발견될 수 있다. 그가 “범속한 트임”이라 표현한 이 비판미학적 수용은 예술이 경험의 차원으로 확장 ․ 전이됨으로써 가능하다. 수용자의 구체적 경험 속에서 예술작품에 부여되었던 아우라, 즉 그 숭배가치와 불가촉의 거리감이 사라지는 순간 비로소 예술은 인간의 직접적인 지각과 감성의 대상으로 자리 잡는다. 이로써 합리적 인식영역에 갇혀 있던 전통적인 미학 개념도 실천영역으로 확장되어 이성과 감성을 아우르는 삶의 미학’으로 풀려나게 된다. 수용 주체의 비판적이고 능동적인 체험과 변증법적 이고 반성적인 비평태도를 통해 인간 바깥에 ‘대상’으로 존재하던 예술이 인간 안으로 들어와 예술 ‘활동’이 되고, 이 활동은 다시 인간의 감성능력과 행복감을 고양시키는 계기로 작동할 수 있다. 아우라의 몰락이라는 예술의 심미적 위기가 예술을 통한 ‘트임과 해방’이라는 새로운 경험적 인식으로 이어질 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to interpret new possibilities with respect to the concept of art. To do this, I will examine the fundamental changes the concept of art has undergone over time due to the influence of electronic technology. I will use Walter Benjamin’s theory of art in the age of technological reproducibility as the basis for my investigation, a theory which was introduced in the first half of the twentieth century. First, the concept of ‘aura’, the methodological core of Benjamin’s theory, will be considered by identifying the multi-layered and ambiguous nature of this concept. With this, I will clarify the possibility of a new dialectical emancipation through art in the era of post-capitalist electronic reproduction, which can be found in the process of secular and ordinary understanding and acceptance of art. Benjamin perceived this possibility in the ‘fall of the aura’. This kind of critical aesthetic acceptance was expressed by him as a ‘profane illumination’ and can be attained by expanding and transposing of the concept of art into the level of experiential dimension. Within the concrete experience of artistic works, their cult value and untouchable distance from the recipient, i. e. the aura, disappear. In such a moment, art becomes an object of direct perception and sensibility of the human spectator. The concept of art that previously existed outside human beings enters into them and becomes an artistic ‘activity’, which can again work as a momentum to enhance the human feeling of happiness. Therefore, the aura and the fall of aura, the crisis of art and the revolution through art are like two sides of the same coin in Benjamin’s philosophy.
