‘Europeanization’ and the Nordic Models: Reforms for Welfare and Competitiveness

영문 초록

Under the rapidly changing circumstances in the 1990s, the European Union has treated globalization as an inevitable process and taken an optimistic approach to globalization. The European Commission has proposed many measures to promote competitiveness and social cohesion of the member countries and has pursued a Europeanization process in which domestic adaptation to the European Union has been emphasized. Southern European eurozone countries have had difficulties in translating European pressures into domestic policy change and eventually failed to adapt the Lisbon strategy over the last ten years. Welfare and labor market institutions in these countries have not undergone a process of Europeanization along with the Lisbon strategy. Despite the high taxation rates and extensive welfare policies, institutional competitiveness and flexibility have allowed the Nordic capitalist nations to achieve Europeanization while maintaining their unique welfare models. Institutional reforms and comparative advantages, or efficiency and complementarity in Nordic countries have become important in responding to the pressures and influences of Europeanization.
