국문 초록

본 연구는 온라인 동영상을 활용하여 학습자들의 독해력과 비판적 사고력을 동시에 향상시키기 위해 설계된 독해수업이 대학교 독해 학습자의 영어 독해수업, 독해 능력 및 정의적 태도에 미치는 영향을 알아보고, 이에 부합하는 효율적인 독해수업을 제안하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 수업에 참여한 서울 소재 S대 학생 32명을 대상으로 총 26차시, 13주간 수업을 진행하였다. 동시에 영어 읽기 및 독해 평가, 그리고 정의적 영역에 대한 설문조사 및 개인 면담을 실시하였다. 이 글을 통해 비판적 사고력 요소에 중점을 두고 설계한 독해수업이 독해능력과 비판적 사고력을 향상에 어느 정도로 긍정적인 영향을 주는지 검증하고자 하였다. 그리고 효율적인 독해수업을 위한 온라인 비디오 활용 방법과 효율성에 대한 아이디어와 통찰력을 제공하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 도출된 결과, 학습자들의 독해력과 비판적 사고력을 향상시킬 목적으로 설계된 온라인 동영상을 활용한 수업은 비판적 사고력을 향상시키고 텍스트에 대한 이해력을 높여 주었다. 또한 온라인 비디오를 활용한 학습활동에 대해서도 긍정적인 반응을 보였으며, 비판적 사고력 함양이라는 목표를 향한 과정이 되었다. 따라서, 학습자들의 비판적 사고력을 향상시키기 위해서는 온라인 비디오를 활용하고 비판적 사고력를 향상시킬 수 있도록 텍스트를 선정하고 그에 상응하는 학습활동에 부합하도록 교육 프로그램을 설계할 필요가 있다. 일방적이고 주입 위주에서 참여적이고 소통이 가능한 영어 읽기 교육패러다임의 변화를 통해서 수많은 영어로 표현된 정보를 비판적으로 선택할 수 있도록 교육이 이루어질 수 있다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to suggest effective reading class activities and discuss the importance of teaching critical thinking in the reading classroom and the incorporation of online videos in the reading classes to help EFL students build topic related schema and improve their reading comprehension as well as critical thinking abilities. This paper also argues the application of critical thinking skills to the reading of the texts enables EFL students to develop the competency to read and their critical thinking abilities at the same time. This study discusses the results of incorporating short online videos in EFL reading activities. Thirty two college students participated in a fifteen week program which involved using online videos for the effective pre-reading activities. They were asked to complete their pre-reading assignments to get prepared for the class activities and to improve critical thinking abilities. They were asked to engage in post-reading activities that required critical thinking. Their comments on this class and responses to the questionnaire were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of incorporating short online videos in the reading classes. The findings of the study are discussed and can be helpful for English teachers in designing their own reading program to foster their students’ critical thinking abilities. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.
