국문 초록

1950년대 이후 미국을 중심으로 일어난 현대도예의 실험적인 양상들은 흙(dirt)에 대한 인식의 전환을 불러오며 공예재인 흙을 예술의 영역으로 확장시켰다. 이러한 관점에서 인간 사회와 자연 세계, 전통적 또는 비전통적인 예술 형태, 예술과 과학의 교차점에서 흙을 해석하는 미국출신의 도예가이자 조각가인 마가렛 부저(Margaret Boozer)의 작품은 주목받을 만하다. 흙의 특성, 역사 및 지질학을 주제로 한 도자설치작품으로 잘 알려진 부저는 건설 현장, 메릴랜드 주 레이니어 산(Mt. Rainier) 스튜디오의 주변 환경 또는 기본적으로 보라색, 적색, 회색, 갈색, 주황색 점토가 발견 될 수 있는 모든 장소에서 재료를 채집하고 분류, 변용하여 사용한다. 채집한 재료는 가공하지 않은 자연 그대로의 소재로 작품을 구성한다. 더트 드로잉(dirt drawing)같은 거대한 바닥 설치, 전형적인 프레임 형태의 흙으로 만든 그림과 디스크를 이용한 벽화 작업은 지질 학적 기원에 대한 은유적인 표현으로 회화적이고 설치적인 화면을 시도한 것이다. 뉴욕 토양 조사와 협업으로 수집된 토양 표본의 미술관 전시는 탈장르, 리서치 등 텍스트와 이미지, 시간과 공간 들이 서로 깊은 관계를 맺는다. 아카이브 및 과학과 예술 프로젝트의 매체로서, 흙은 특정 공간을 인지하기 위한 중요한 요소로 작용한다. 이러한 주변 환경에서 발굴한 흙은 기존 틀에 얽매이지 않고 다양한 스토리가 내재된 조형언어로 해석될 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다. 본 연구는 부저의 작품에 나타나는 물리적 드로잉 및 벽화 설치라는 회화적 요소와 특정 지역과 관련된 작품의 공간적 요소에 대해 살펴봄으로써 현대도예의 영역이 확장된 시점에서 새로운 방향성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The experimental phenomenon of modern ceramics emerged mainly concentrated in America since 1950s aroused the change of recognition as to dirt, expanding the use of dirt, the material for crafts toward the realm of arts. From this perspective, the works of Margaret Boozer, the American ceramist and sculpture artist, are noteworthy in the sense that she interprets dirt at the intersection of human society/natural world, traditional/non-traditional Boozer, well-known for her installation works of ceramics focused on the themes of characteristics and history of dirt as well as geology, collects, classifies and transforms the materials from different areas such as constructions sites, the surrounding setting of the studio of Mt. Rainier of Maryland and all places where purple, red, gray, brown and orange clays can be found. The collected materials, the unworked natural matters are used to compose her works. The dirt-based drawings constituting huge floor installation and typical frame shape including dirt drawing and the mural painting works based on disks are considered an metaphorical expression for the geological origin and an attempt of pictorial and installation screen. In the museum exhibition of soil specimen collected by the collaborative work with the New York City Reconnaissance Soil Survey, we can see that there is a strong relationship among text, image, time and space covering the sphere of decategorization of genre and research. As a means of archive, science and art project, dirt plays an important role in recognizing a particular space. This dirt found in the surrounding environment proposes possibilities of interpretation of a formative language with diverse stories, not constrained by the existing conventional frames. By inquiring into the physical drawings, pictorial elements of mural painting installation and the spatial elements of the works relevant to particular areas observed in the works of Boozer, this study intends to propose a new directionality from the point of the expanded realm of modern ceramics.
