기대승의 경서 이해와 인간

국문 초록

15~16세기의 조선 사상계가 도덕과 의리 실천, 정통과 이단의 구분, 존재와 당위의 문제를 당면과제로 삼았다면 기대승(奇大升, 1527~1572)은 이러한 당면한 문제에 충실하게 대답한 유자(儒者)이다. 기대승은 경서 이해에서 ‘本原’과 ‘本旨’라는 용어를 사용하고 있다. 기대승에게 학문이란 ‘본원’과 ‘본지’가 무엇인지를 해명하는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 ‘본원’과 ‘본지’의 해명과 지향은 기대승이 전망하는 ‘유학적 세계상’을 밝힐 수 있는 중요한 개념적 이해를 제공해준다. 이러한 점에서 기대승의 학문관은 본원 지향적 이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. ‘본원’의 지향 과정에서 ‘본지’가 확립된다. 그의 학문관에서 보이는 本原 지향 의식은 조선 사상사가 당면한 사상사적 질문에 대한 근본적인 물음으로 이해할 수 있다. 본원을 지향한다는 것은 도덕적 행위의 실천적 정당성의 바탕이 되는 사고의 근원을 물어가는 과정이다. 기대승의 사고의 근원을 묻는 본원에 대한 물음이 사회적, 정치적 혼란기로서의 16세기에 제기되었다는 점에서 기대승의 학문은 시대성을 초월하기 위한 방법론의 반영으로도 이해할 수 있다. 본원에 대한 해명은 결국 ‘성인의 도가 무엇인가에 대한 물음이다. 기대승은 성인을 ‘天地之心’으로 설명하는데 이것은 곧 ‘천지지심’을 알아야만 성인을 알 수 있다는 의미이기도 하다. ‘천지지심’으로서의 성인을 내면화하고 내면화된 ‘聖人之心’을 다시 사회와 정치에 적용해 가는 그 과정 속에 학문함의 의미와 인간의 모습이 있다.

영문 초록

If Joseon ideological world during the 15th~16th century focused on the matter of practice of morality and loyalty, division of authenticity and heresy, existence and justification, Guidaeseung (奇大升, 1527~1572) was a confucian scholar who faithfully responded to this matter. Guidaeseung uses the terms, ‘Bonwon’ and ‘Bonji’ in Gyeongseo understanding. To Guidaeseung, study can be said a process to explain what is ‘Bonwon’ and ‘Bonji’. Therefore, explanation and aim for ‘Bonwon’ and ‘Bonji’ provides important conceptual understanding that can determine ‘confucian world view’ that Guidaeseung prospects. In this respect, Guidaeseung’s view of learning can be said ‘Bonwon orientation’. ‘Bonji’ is established in the process of aiming for ‘Bonwon’. Bonwon orientation consciousness in his view of learning can be understood as the fundamental question on the ideological question that Joseon ideological history faced. Aiming for Bonwon is a process of inquiring the origin of thinking that is the basis of practical justification of moral behavior. In respect that the question of Bonwon inquiring the origin of Guidaeseung’s thinking was raised during the 16th century as the socially and politically confused stage, Guidaeseung’s study can be understood as the reflection of methodology to surpass the characteristic of the period. Explanation of Bonwon is eventually a question on what is ‘Tao of Great person’. Guidaeseung explained Great person based on ‘Cheonjijisim ’, which implies that Great person can be understood when ‘Cheonjijisim’ is understood. The meaning of learning and the human figure are in the process of internalizing Great person as ‘Cheonjijisim’ and again applying that internalized ‘Seong-in jisim’ to the society and politics.
