국문 초록

이 논문은 中節 개념을 중심으로 고봉 기대승의 사단칠정론에 내포된 철학적 의의를 조명해보고자 하는 시도이다. 이 논문에서는 우선 퇴계와 다른 고봉의 칠정 개념을 분석하였다. 논문에 따르면 퇴계와 고봉의 논쟁은 칠정 개념에 대한 이해 차이에서 비롯되었는데, 고봉은 『중용』의 ‘性發爲情’ 논리에 입각하여 칠정도 사단과 마찬가지로 본질적으로는 선한 것이라고 주장하였다. 그리고 사단과 칠정, 즉 순선한 감정과 유선유악한 감정의 차이는 오직 중절에 있을 뿐이라고 강조하였다. 이 논문에 따르면, 중절이란 감정이 현실에서 도덕적 적절성을 성취한 것으로, 고봉에게 있어 사단은 현실에서 도덕적 적절성을 획득한 감정이라고 규정된다. 이러한 고봉 사칠론의 함의를 조명하기 위해 이 논문은 중절의 의미가 무엇인지 분석하고 있다. 아울러 고봉이 四端不中節의 문제를 제기하여 퇴계를 비판하면서도 퇴계의 호발설을 수용한 이유에 대해 설명하면서, 중절 문제를 중심으로 고봉의 사단칠정론을 종합적으로 해명하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper illustrates the significance of appropriateness in Gi Daesueng’s emotion theory, that is, Four-Seven debate. This paper, first, analyzed his concept of Seven Emotions differentiated with Yi Hwang. According to this paper, Gi Daeseung’s concept of Seven Emotions was based on the structure of Zhongyong, all kinds of emotions are basically the manifestation of moral innate nature, and then essentially good. This is very foundation of Gi Daeseung’s philosophy distinguished from Yi Hwang. In advance, This paper, second, elucidated the philosophical meanings of the appropriateness. According to him, the difference between Four and Seven was determined on whether to be appropriate or not. Therefore This paper illuminated the meaning of appropriateness and regulated it as universality and publicity of emotions. This paper, finally, examined the fact that Gi Daeseung argued about “Four moral emotions can be in appropriate”(四端不中節) and the reason why he accepted Yi hwang’s statement that Seven Emotions were derived from material force(氣).
