국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 존 스타인벡의 󰡔변덕스런 버스에 대한 여성혐오주의 논란을 쇼펜하우어와 니체의 주의(主意)주의 성(性)의지론에 비추어 재해석하는 것이다. 연구방법으로서 필자들은 우선 이 소설에 대한 논점들을 살펴보고, 논쟁거리가 된 텍스트를 중심으로 이야기 전반을 간단하게 소개한다. 그 과정에서 당시 작가의 험난한 혼인생활에서 야기된 여성폄하적 태도와 성적으로 더 매력적인 자가 성교에 성공할 가능성이 높다는 성적 선택설에 입각한 사고가 이러한 논란에 상당한 영향을 끼쳤음을 제시한다. 또한 이 소설가가 심리적 서술방법으로 열명에 이르는 등장인물들의 내면세계를 거의 균등하게 묘사하고 있는 흥미로운 사실이 성의지의 보편성과 관련 이 있음을 밝힌다. 이것을 감안하여 의지가 이성보다 인간의 실제 삶에 더 커다란 역할을 한다고 주장하는 쇼펜하우어의 생명의지와 니체의 역능의지를 원용하여 이 작품을 해석한다. 이 분석을 통해 이 소설은 단지 작가의 여성혐오주의에 기인하기보다 제2차 세계대전직후 미국사회에 만연되어있던 자본주의 병폐들 중 하나인 성의 물화현상에 반대하는 인간의 순수한 본성을 묘사하고 있는 것임을 주장한다. 나아가서 작가뿐만 아니라 이 철학자들의 사상들이 반드시 여성혐오주의를 지지한 것이 아님을 강조한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to reinterpret the controversy over the misogyny of John Steinbeck’s The Wayward Bus in the light of Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s voluntaristic sexual will theory. For a research method, the researchers first discuss the points at issue about this novel and introduce the whole story centralized on its controversial text briefly. The process suggests the fact that this argument is considerably affected by the attitude of denigrating women caused by the writer’s stormy marriage life of the time and the idea grounded in the sexual selection theory that a more sexually attractive person is more likely to have the possibility of making love. Also, the interesting fact that the novelist describes the inner world of as many as ten characters almost equally in the psychological methods of narration is revealed to be related to the universality of the sexual will. Considering this aspect, the researchers interpret this work by quoting Schopenhauer’s will-to-live and Nietzsche’s will for power, who insist that the will plays a larger role than the intellect in real human lives. Through this analysis, it is claimed that this novel merely delineates the pure human nature against the phenomenon of making sexuality a commodity, one of the capitalistic ills with which the American society was pervaded right after World War Ⅱ rather than being merely caused by the writer’s misogyny. Moreover, the researchers emphasize that the two philosophers’ ideas as well as the writer’s do not necessarily support misogyny.
