영문 초록

Nicodemus is both individual and representative character which the author of John's Gospel introduced to his reader. His meeting and dialogue with Jesus in 3:1-21 is the first of many characters in the Gospel. He is the one who comes to Jesus, yet he speaks only three times in the entire dialogue while Jesus dominates the rest of it. The occasion of his visit is not unambiguous, but his confession tells that he is an admirer of Jesus' teaching and sign. He appears three times in the Gospel(3:1-21, 7:45-52, 19:38-42) but in none of them his role is not clear. This articles is to examine the role of Nicodemus through narrative reading on the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3:1-21. The emphasis puts on the narrative analysis of a judgment of character under the rubric of the narrative criticism. The strategy adapted to investigate about the interesting character will the narrative reading along with reader-response analysis from literary point of view. Jesus disqualifies him as the teacher of Israel because he is too knowledgeable about his tradition that he can accept Jesus' teaching on the kingdom of God. Nicodemus does not understand Jesus' teaching; it means that he is not ready take the role of disciple. The characterization of Nicodemus, however, is not clearly described by the narrator. The narrator prefers to leave Nicodemus' decision of faith upon the reader as on of the unsolved prolepses. The unsolved prolepses, however, more specifically the openendlessness is not totally exempted in the narrative analysis of the characterization of Nicodemus in John 3:1-21. A more critical investigation of the portrayal of Nicodemus as judgment of character in the rubric of the narrative criticisms and the reader-response shows a helpful clue to identify his characterization not as model disciple in this narrative structure in John 3:1-21.
