Juvenile recidivism is getting more public attention because of their delinquency and recidivism rates are increasing. It is becoming more necessary of researching gender differences when it comes to predicting factors of juveniles' recidivism because girls' delinquency is showing different characteristics from those of in the past. 419 subjects who are now under probation in Busan probation offices with recidivism are examined to find out how gender differences effect on recidivism and what prediction factors are involved in it. The research results are as follows.
First, adolescents with recidivism consists of 86.6%of boys(363) and 13.4% of girls(56). Second, the most frequent delinquency is thefts for boys and violent assaults for girls, respectively. Third, girls are more susceptible to runaways from home, suicide thinking and attempts than boys, otherwise boys have more experiences of sex related behaviors. Fourth, statistically meaningful differences of genders are shown in terms of depression and anxiety, negative relationship between parents and children, parents' abuse, discounting view of future, cynical view of conventional norms, and hostile view of relationship. Girls are more susceptible to all these predicting factors than boys. Fifth, for boys, the first year of juvenile delinquency is the most influential predicting factor of recidivism followed by the time span between first and second delinquency, age, teachers' attitudes, intensity of delinquency, their friends, types of parents, empathy. For girls, depression is the most important factor followed by runaway experiences, negative relationship between parents and children, empathy, hostile view of relationship, parents' education, parents' abuse, discounting view of future. The study suggests, based on the research results, policy and program developments to prevent juveniles' recidivism considering gender differences.
