국문 초록

<참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움>의 중심주제는 소설의 제목이 말해주듯이 ‘참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움’이다. 작가는 이 중심주제를 드러내기 위해 여러 주제들을 동원하고 있는데, 이들 중 가장 중요한 주제들은 ‘가벼움과 무거움’, ‘영혼과 육체’, ‘대장정’으로 표현되는 키치, 그리고 ‘카레닌의 미소’로 표현되는 목가(牧歌) 등이다. 그리고 소설의 중심주제인 참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움은 누구보다도 주인공 사비나와 관련을 갖는데, 사비나가 배반에서 배반으로 끝없는 탈출을 감행하면서 끝내 느끼는 감정이 존재의 참을 수 없는 가벼움이고 존재의 공허함이다. <참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움>은 토마시와 테레사, 프란츠와 사비나 간의 사랑을 그리고 있는 사랑 소설이다. 그런데 이들의 사랑은 우여곡절로 점철된 사랑으로서 주인공들 중 가장 덜 키치적인 사비나와 가장 더 키치적인 프란츠 사이의 사랑은 두 사람 간의 이른바 ‘이해되지 않는 단어들’에 의해 표현되는 몰이해의 패러독스로 인해 파탄을 맞고, 토마시와 테레사 사이의 사랑은 강자와 약자 간의 심한 불균형성과 비대칭성으로 몸살을 앓는다. 하지만 가벼운 사랑의 화신으로서 절대 강자인 토마시가 영혼과 육체의 일원적인 사랑을 고집하는 절대 약자인 무거움의 테레사에게로 하중(荷重)을 옮겨옴으로써 두 사람의 사랑은 균형을 갖추게 되고 행복을 얻게 된다. 그러나 시간의 영원회귀가 작동하는 목가적인 전원 속에서의 더없이 행복한 두 사람의 사랑은 어이없는 교통사고로 죽음을 맞으면서 비극으로 끝나고 만다. 여기서 우리는 한번 가면 되돌아올 수 없는 인간 존재의 일회성 앞에서 참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움과 인생무상을 경험한다.

영문 초록

The main theme of Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being is the title itself, i.e. the unbearable lightness of being. To expose the main theme author mobilizes many other themes like lightness and weight, soul and body, kitsch represented by 'Grand March', and idyll represented by 'Karenin's smile', as shown in the Contents of the book. The main theme of the novel, the unbearable lightness of being is related with the heroin Sabina first of all. She meets with the unbearable lightness of being at her final stage of continuous betrayals and then she feels emptiness all around her. At this moment author raises a question: "One could betray one's parents, husband, country, love, but when parents, husband, country, and love were gone - what was left to betray?" The goal of all her betrayals became the emptiness. Kundera's novel is a love story between Tomáš and Tereza, between Franz and Sabina. However their loves were with many twists and turns. The love between Franz and Sabina came to failure because of the paradox of misunderstanding represented by the so-called 'Misunderstood Words'. And the fact that their love was the love between the most kitsch oriented Franz and the least kitsch oriented Sabina anticipates that their love could hardly be completed. The love between Tomáš and Tereza is based on the extreme unbalance between the strong man Tomáš and the weak Tereza and their love was an 'oddly asymmetrical construction' supported by the absolute certainty of her fidelity. However the play boy Tomáš gives up his Don Juanism and accepts Tereza's proposal to leave Prague for the country and there they find peace in the idyllic countryside, in nature, surrounded by the domestic animals and in the bosom of regularly recurring seasons. But their happiness does not last long. Soon they are killed by car accident. Here we experience the unbearable lightness of being as well as the vanity of life.
