에스토니아 레기라울의 율격구조와 근대적 차용

국문 초록

레기라울은 에스토니아에서 19세기까지 에스토니아 전 지역에서 불리던 전통 민요를 일컫는 말이다. 서부 핀우그르어의 언어적 환경에서 기원한 에스토니아어 사용 환경에 맞추어진 독특한 성격과 구조의 율격을 가지고 있지만 멜로디가 단순하고 반복적이기 때문에 자칫 지루하고 단조로워질 수 있는 어려움을 극복하기 위해 여러 가지 다양한 표현법을 차용하고 있다. 레기라울은 에스토니아어의 언어적 성격을 대변하여 악센트가 떨어지는 강음절, 약음절, 그리고 장음절과 단음절이 교차적으로 사용되는 것이 기본적인 형태로서 영시의 강약격 시구조와 비슷해 보이나, 인도 유럽어권에서는 불가능한 다양한 표현법들을 사용하여 레기라울만의 독특한 분위기를 창출한다. 그 표현법들은 에스토니아어가 가지고 있는 언어적 장점을 십분 살리기 위해서 음운을 반복해서 리듬감을 주거나, 단어나 표현들을 적절하게 사용하여 재미를 부여해 주는 대구법, 그리고 시적인 표현을 꾀하기 위해서 어휘 자체에 변화를 주는 방법 등 다양하다. 그러나 각운보다는 두운이 주로 사용되며, 시어 역시 이전에 내려오던 전통적으로 전해져 내려온 고어들이 주로 나타나므로 어휘가 비교적 제한적이라는, 형식과는 별도의 내용적 형식도 갖추고 있다. 이 논문을 통해서 단지 외형적 측면만이 아닌 내재적 측면에서 레기라울의 표현적 특성이 어떤 것인지 고찰해보고자 한다. 이런 전통방식들은 칼레비포엑 같은 민족서사시, 미흐켈 베스케, 아도 레인발드의 작품 등 민족의식각성기에 에스토니아 민중들에게 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 베스케나 레인발드는 에스토니아의 소작농 가정에서 태어나 어린 시절부터 레기라울과 밀접한 환경에서 자라났기 때문에 어린 시절에 대한 추억과 향수가 잘 남아있으며 그로 인해 동시대를 살았던 민족시인들의 작품과 비교해 볼 때도 시상이나 표현 등에서 큰 차이를 보이고 있다. 애석하게도 이런 전통작시방식은 위에 논의된 두 시인들의 세대를 이후로 문학계에서는 거의 사라졌지만, 현재 벨로 토르미스 같은 음악가들을 통해서 그 전통이 새롭게 이어지고 있다.

영문 초록

Regilaul is the term referring to a traditional Estonian folksong which was formed on the linguistic background of a Western Finno-Ugric language and functioned as very meaningful means for Estonian people to express their feelings and moods till the mid-19th century. However, it began to decline rapidly since the Western influence at the end of the 19th century. The tradition of regilaul almost disappeared in the mainland of Estonia, but it is merely maintained alive in a few villages in the countryside, such as Kihnu island in West Estonia and South-East region inhabited by Seto tribe, which demonstrates cultural distinctness. The exact meaning of regilaul is uncovered yet, but it is believed to be the combination of the word laul, the song in Estonian, and Rege, which means ‘the row’ in German dialect. The purpose of my study is to analyze the basic prosody of regilaul and methods of expressions, which have never been introduced in Korean academic journals, and to analyze its influence on the art of verse-making during the 19th century, when the modern Estonian literature developed, with the examples of two poets Mihkel Veske and Ado Reinhold, as well as Kalevipoeg, the national epic. Traditionally a regilaul is not divided into stanzas and the end rhyme is hardly used. The system of rhythm is similar to trochee frequently utilized in English prosody: the stronger parts, where an accent falls, and weaker parts are repeatedly placed in one verse. Generally, a strong part with an accent is composed of a long syllable. In most cases each verse is divided into 8 parts according to the quantity of syllables, however verses can be divided into two bigger parts by the interval in the middle. One of the most important features of regilaul is a very loose link between lyrics and melody. A melody is not used exclusively for specified lyrics but also found in other songs with different lyrics. The link of melody to specific lyrics began to appear in the 18th century and established during the 19th century. Mostly a verse comprises one complete sentence or expression. Many forms of expression are applied to prevent monotony or simplicity of regilaul, such as parallelism, alliteration, repetition, epithet, intentional modification of vocabulary, etc. Those factors, which have been used in oral literature, were applied for the versification of modern poetry by Mihkel Veske and Ado Reinvald. They are proclaimed to be the greatest masters who revived the main essence of expressions and features of traditional prosody in their works. Additionally, the prosody of regilaul is successfully revived in Kalevipoeg by F.R.Kreutzwald, which encouraged the national awakening of Estonian people in the 19th century. The prosody of regilaul generally resembling the utterance of Estonian vernacular made a huge contribution to the open expression of the sufferings and hardships experienced by Estonians.
