‘꼭두각시전’의 혼성텍스트적 성격과 주제의식

국문 초록

본고는 ‘꼭두각시전’에 노처녀가를 비롯한 다양한 문학관습이 내재한 점에 주목하여 꼭두각시전이 지닌 혼성텍스트적 성격과 주제의식을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 꼭두각시전은 광명서관본 <로처녀 고독각시>를 텍스트로 하여 여타의 이본을 참작했고, 노처녀가는 삼설기본<노처녀가>를 텍스트로 했다. 꼭두각시전은 주인공이 처한 상황과 남녀의 결연에서 <노처녀가>의 ‘노처녀’와는 상반된 모습을 보였다. 불구의 몸으로 준수한 양반도령과 성혼하는 ‘노처녀’와는 달리 가난한 고아인 소설의 주인공이 극빈한 집안의 불구 신랑과 혼인하는 것은 작품의 개연성을 획득하는 효과가 있다. 또 꼭두각시전은 판소리 사설, 잡가, 민요, 설화, 민속인형극 등의 다양한 기존 문학관습을 활용하고 있는데, 특히 민요와 설화의 차용은 인물창조나 사건의 원인을 제공하는 중요한 역할을 하고 있고, 민속인형극인 <꼭두각시놀음>에서는 주인공을 착안하되 그것을 역이용하여 유교적 주제의식의 구현에 이바지하고 있다. <노처녀가>가 시집 못간 여성의 한탄을 발랄한 서민적 기풍으로 표현하는 것에 그쳤다면, 꼭두각시전은 혼성텍스트적 성격을 통해 서민들의 원초적 생명력과 발랄함을 표현하고 있고, 이것이 성혼 후 유교적 부덕의 강화로 귀결되는 것을 강조하고 있다. 이것은 발랄한 서민의식에 유교적 주제를 덧씌우려는 의도로, 조선후기 외세의 침탈과 전통적 가치관의 붕괴 속에서 보수적 가치관의 회복만이 당면한 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 주제의식을 나타내고 있다. 꼭두각시전의 주인공을 민속인형극에서 착안한 이유도 <꼭두각시놀음>을 풍속을 비속하게 하는 원인으로 보고 그 개량화를 주장했던, 당시의 시대적 분위기에서 기인한다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This paper is aimed at the analysis of the characteristics of Kkogdugaksigeon and its main-concept, noting the correlation between ‘Nocheonyeoga-a spinster song’ and the established literary customs, for the purpose of studying Kkogdugaksigeon. According to the results of this study, Kkogdugaksigeon is opposed to Nocheonyeoga, showing the mixed-text factors, which means partially borrowing or drawing an idea from the previous literary customs. The summary of the mixed-text factors and main concept of Kkogdugaksigeon is as follows; in the first place, the main characters of Kkogdugaksigeon and Nocheonyeoga have the opposite position in their situations and the choice of marriage mates. As for Kkogdugaksigeon, this distinct feature contributes to gaining the probability of this story, giving both tragic and realistic personality to a heroine, Kkogdugaksi. Secondly, Kkogdugaksigeon makes good use of various literary customs like Pansoril, Japga, Seolhwa, and so on. Proper uses of Seolhwa, such as ‘Kkogdugasi-play’ and ‘I Live Up to My Fortune.’ play an important role not just on a simply fun-oriented approach but also on a portrait of characters and theme presentation. On the one hand, the name and appearance of a heroine in this story is devised from a folk puppet play, Kkogdugaksi-play. Considering the process of a heroine's preparing for wedding gifts has a similar trace as that of Kkogdugaksi-play, Kkogdugaksigeon is associated with Kkogugaksi-play. Thirdly, while Nocheonyeoga expresses the lamentation of a not- married lady in a humble style, Kkogdugaksigeon focuses on strengthening Confucian wife-virtues after marriage by offering common people's primitive vitality. Thus, Kkogdugaksigeon implies that showing a variety of fun and a humble style through the acceptance of the previous literary customs is meant to present a little boring story effectively and put Confucian theme into cheerful common people's thoughts at the same time. The reason the writer had this kind of main concept is that the answer to solving the facing problems-eternal threats in the late Choseon Dynasty and the collapse of traditional values, was just to preserve Confucian values. In particular, the fact that Kkogdugaksigeon is derived from the source of characters in Kkogdugaksi-play suggests that the upper class in those times considered Kkogdugaksi-play as an object of manners improvement. Furthermore, this story reveals that a woman in the chaotic state of value is able to become an independently happy being in her home by performing consistent endeavor, sincerity and human duty on the view point of a woman's lifetime.
