For 15 years or so before 1915, when Modernism began to be popular, the declaration of the republican government brought a wide spectrum of social and political changes to Portugal. It is in the same period that there was a movement towards national identity under the influence of symbolism as well as under the flag of the revival of nationalism. Owing to the second-stage publishment of Águia in 1912, the Renascença Portuguesa (Portuguese Renaissance) started to unfold its activities and the Saudosism led by Teixeira de Pascoaes drew a nation-wide attention. Unlike other literary magazines which were short-lived at that time, Águia, a bulletin, had been published until 1932. This was made possible by both the public and a number of the intellectuals who commonly felt the necessity of restoring their glorious country and unifying dissociated ideologies by means of their common sentiment, Saudade. The main concept of Saudade was not being reminiscent of the past but intended to create the great future of Portugal by unifying public opinions. Águia, which was originally published for literature and criticism, gradually expanded its field to a wide range of spheres such as science, philosophy, social criticism and art. The reason for the extension of the fields it covered was because it changed the purpose of the publishment from a specific field of literature to the development of national education in the country so that the intellectual power of the nation should deserve special emphasis. The enlightenment of national consciousness and national education took precedence of the establishment of new Portugal and the revival of the country. However, the Saudosism which made a great contribution to the history of Portuguese literature vanished soon from the literary world. Some critics like António Sérgio and Raul Proença who regarded the Saudosism as a chauvinistic and exclusive literary movement seceded from the circle in pursuit of social and political literature. Furthermore, since Pascoaes' theory was not influential enough to make a drastic reform of the stream of consciousness of the Portuguese, it made a concession to a demand of a new reforming trend of thoughts, namely modernism. However, it must be noted that the national sentiment the Saudosism and the new analysis of the Sebastianism rendered great service to the unveiling of national identity as well as the unification of disintegrated consciousness.
