영문 초록

  This study aims at analyzing structure of space which appears in Lee Kang Baek"s plays and studying meaning and characteristics of space. He uses techniques of apologue and allegory as the device to contain characters" personality, ideology or the writer"s view of the world. He constructs space and expands its meaning in order to use these techniques effectively. Accordingly, we are to open possibilities to look at his plays with new eyesight by clarifying features of space structure and its meaning.
  In the play, space is explained being largely divided into both ways: the stage space where actors(actresses)" gesture and behavior are done and the audience can perceive in the concrete and drama space embodied by the audience or readers" imagination. Each space plays a role of the organizer of meaning that structuralizes conflicts between characters.
  Especially, his early short stories deepen conflicts between characters by dualizing into space with heterogeneous properties. 「Five」, 「A guard」, 「Eggs」show antagonism between the ruling-ruled classes through vertical space division. While ‘a storage under the ship’, ‘An observation tower’, ‘A museum’ are spaces where ruled classes exist and they are stage spaces which are provided as closed and narrow spaces, ‘The sea’, ‘The wasteland’, ‘Inside the forest’ are spaces where ruling classes exist and open and broad spaces, and they are provided as drama spaces, which are not reconstructed on the real stage but exist. The situations are like the preceding also in「Jewelry and women」, 「Three」in which humans that the "I" is being lost, are described. Tragic space realizing existence and existential space are contrasted each other in "the jeweler"s room" "a city of sensational tension under the hot sun, which is closed and disconnected from the outside world". And plays are developed divided into two parts of ideal space and realistic space with oppositive properties in「confusion and order in an art gallery」, 「Do you really think I am such a person who changes according to the weather?」.
  Meanwhile, Lee Kang Baek uses space as the device to show the author"s view of the world and express the theme besides dividing space into two parts in order to deepen the conflict structure. Namely, he shows the process that incidents occur and are settled in main spaces. In「A family record」‘the basement’ or ‘trap’ is the space where the crime of Jonghum"s family is accused and they awake characters without a sense of sin to quilt feeling. "The 14th drift", "the swamp" are the same in「People in the Jurassic period」or 「Homoseparatus」. The conflict deepened due to an accident of "the 14th drift" got to have a clue to be settled in "the 14th drift"‘, ‘The swamp’ has the meaning as space to suggest that it is not easy to escape from the separated situation. In「The bubble」the contrast between immateriality and materiality is shown respectively through "a pond" and " a mirror".
  As mentioned above, in many cases Lee Kang Baek limits characteristics of characters and incidents through peculiarities of space. And he fix characteristics of characters still more by contrasting drama space with stage space besides visualized stage space or expresses the author"s view of the world deepening it. As he is currently showing positive activity in writing, it should be followed to study his work more ceaselessly.
